365 Project - Day-001
The ruins at Svensen Island,OR. Came across these old cattle farms and houses that were destroyed when the levee broke on Christmas Eve 2003. Nature has since reclaimed much of the land and the old houses are lush with moss and other plant life growing everywhere. It's sad to think of the displaced families but also very beautiful to look at.

I can see scenes like this appearing in the UK as well as flooding gets worse.

Though it makes a beautiful image I wouldn't wish this upon anyone. To see ones whole life changed in an instant. I hope everything goes okay for you over there.

Thanks, luckily I live on land high enough for it not to affect me, but for those who have been affected by the floods it is a real shame. Some authorities have already abandoned their defences.

It's a big undertaking if you want to do it well. My friend and I did it in 2010 and aimed for a 'portfolio worthy' shot every day, which meant that we pretty much dedicated all our free time to photography.

We had a group at the time with a small group of us all 365ing, there are still some articles which might be a help to you. You can check the group out here Challenge-365. If you have any 365 questions you're more than welcome to message me about it.

I just love the color manipulations you've done here   It's not extreme, but puts a rather specific tone to the image.  This is very nice :)

Thank you that's very kind. Actually I really didn't do very much in the way of manipulation. Mother Nature did most of the work for me. I added a nature orange filter for warming. I like my images a little warmer, just personal preference. I then decreased the saturation by 30% and the contrast by 20%. Added a little sharpening too because RAW files tend to be a little soft. Pretty simple edit all in all I think. Thanks again Jon!

Ah, even better.  I say (from my film days) that the less manipulation you do (in programs), the better.

Yes, this is a very most excellent shot :)

You do know #hashtags dont work here, right?
But that's not to deter from the topic here at all, that picture is.... wonderful. Rich in both contrast and atmosphere. And... there's just this something one can't quite describe in words or put a finger on it, I just felt and still feel mesmerized by this shot. The fates and untold stories shrouding this house, leaves one wondering I guess.
Great work!

Thank you, glad you liked it. I spotted this place while shooting at an old Bumble Bee Tune factory not far away in Ilwaco, WA. The island had three cattle farms on it that were over come when the levee broke in 2003. It was really foggy that morning and the colors of the old houses were just spectacular in the mist!

I use hash tags on all the pages I post to. I know they don't work on some sites, but I never know how the bots are going to read the pages and when you have the third most common last name, and fifth most common first name in America, you have to try and grab every advantage I can get for the Search Engines to index my work. Plus I have the exact same name as an astronaut who was sadly killed on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003. All these things tend to push me further down on Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. So anyway, thank you, yes I did know they don't serve much purpose on DA. But in the end I figure I would rather have them and not need them, than need them and not have them.
